James Beck’s leadership qualities, problem-solving skills, and management expertise ensures that Mayfield’s operations run like a well-oiled machine. He thrives when faced with the challenges of investing and navigating through an ever-changing business world. Building deep, long-lasting relationships and aligning multiple interests are two of his essential abilities. As a well-respected voice in the venture capital community with a unique background, he offers a valuable and rare perspective toward developing solutions to difficult problems in a variety of situations.

As COO, he has a broad range of organizational responsibilities. His primary objective is to continue to build a world-class organization that furthers the firm’s ability to evolve as an institution for future investment vehicles. Previously, he was an audit manager for Arthur Andersen where his clients consisted of various Silicon Valley software, hardware, and service organizations. James is actively involved with the NVCA’s CFO Taskforce. He also serves as a member of the board of trustees, treasurer, and corporate secretary with the Anita Borg Institute – a nonprofit organization focused on the advancement of women in technology. James attended the Executive Program at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business and holds a BS in Business from the University of the Pacific. He is a certified public accountant and certified management accountant.
